ART
I started my professional life as an artist in the 1990's Vancouver underground 'zine scene, where I self-published comics in The Drippy Gazette (later Drippytown Comics). During that time, I was also working on other projects in a variety of roles, including: writer/illustrator for three issues of Crucial Fiction (a historical biography comic series published by Fantagraphics Books), storyboard artist for the Cartoon Network television animated series Ed, Edd n Eddy, a character designer/animator for the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network animated series Artie the Ant, and more.
In 2007, I created artwork for Ann Marie Fleming's award winning graphic novel, The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam, published by Penguin Books. The book was named on the American Library Association's Top Ten Graphic Novels for Teens and won the Doug Wright Award in 2008. I also worked on the animated film adaptation, produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
While editing Drippytown Comics, I discovered the writings of 19th-century American author Stephen Crane and became so inspired by his literary style that I adapted three of his works into comics, using my old mascot Drippy the Newsboy as the protagonist for each. Conundrum Press published The Adventures of Drippy the Newsboy, Volume I: Drippy's Mama (2015); Volume II: The Red Drip of Courage (2015) and Volume III: The Dripping Boat (2020).
In 2018, I moved to Middlesbrough, UK to teach comics, art, and illustration at Teesside University and create works for Viz Comic, York University, and Streetwise Opera.
